Encounters at the U.S. border drop 9% in May, before asylum restrictions kicked in

The number of encounters with migrants attempting to cross into the U.S. dropped 9% in May compared to April, and there was a 17% decrease from the same month a year ago. Border Patrol made 117,900 arrests in May, down from 128,900 in April, marking the fifth straight month of decreasing encounters since the record high in December of 301,983 stops.
There was a 25% decrease in daily encounters between ports of entry since the May 5th asylum restrictions were implemented, showing an impact. The Tucson sector reported the highest number of encounters in May, followed closely by San Diego and El Paso. Most intercepted individuals were single adults, primarily Mexican nationals.
