A group of Mississippi sheriff's deputies, known as the Goon Squad, traded gruesome photos and made disturbing jokes in a private text thread, including references to rape and shocking people with Tasers.
Their supervisor often participated in the conversations, with encrypted WhatsApp messages revealing years of inappropriate banter among the patrol unit, which had a history of terrorizing residents in central Mississippi.
While some deputies involved in the chat have pleaded guilty and been sentenced to federal prison for serious crimes, others have not faced charges despite their involvement. Several deputies justified their comments as jokes and denied any illegal activity.
Despite the scandal, at least nine deputies who were part of the Goon Squad still work at the department. Lt. Jeffrey Middleton, a supervisor, awarded commemorative coins to Goon Squad members, highlighting their association with the group.
