Three people were killed and four were seriously injured when a bridge in Simpson County, Mississippi, collapsed during demolition preparation. The bridge had been closed since Sept. 18.
Gov. Tate Reeves confirmed the tragedies on social media, noting that first responders from local and state agencies were at the scene addressing the aftermath of the incident.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg indicated that the Federal Highway Administration is looking into the circumstances surrounding the premature collapse during a demolition project.
Simpson County Coroner Terry Tutor reported that seven construction workers were on-site, and the bridge's collapse occurred while they were operating heavy machinery.
