The tax-exempt heritage assets scheme allows wealthy landowners to avoid inheritance tax by designating their land as heritage, a loophole benefiting at least 355 individuals.
Campaigners argue that the conditions are so loose that they do not necessitate any real environmental protection or care for the land despite the public access requirements.
The recent disclosure by HMRC reveals that the total tax deferred by just a few estates under this scheme was approximately 68m, highlighting significant financial benefits for aristocrats.
As noted by the Institute for Fiscal Studies, only 4% of estates pay inheritance tax, indicating that those exploiting this loophole belong to a considerably affluent class.
