HM Revenue and Customs received 1,271 exemption applications for Making Tax Digital (MTD) and has decided on 881, approving 661 and rejecting 220. Exemptions cover taxpayers who cannot use MTD for Income Tax, for example due to age or disability. Fewer than 0.1 percent of the 780,000 sole traders and landlords required to shift to MTD for Income Tax have been exempted. More than 37,000 people have registered and over 13,500 have submitted a test quarterly update. First quarterly reports are due by August 7 and penalty points will not start until the 2027-28 tax year.
