"It's an absolute insult, a despicable insult to the memories and families of the 97. It's purely offensive, I just can't believe they would even consider speaking"
"Mr MacKenzie had been interviewed as part of a news package on Sunday evening which sought a range of views from people across the media industry"
"completely duped"
BBC interviewed Kelvin MacKenzie following the announced resignations of director general Tim Davie and BBC News CEO Deborah Turness after a leaked internal memo about a Panorama episode. The leaked memo said Panorama had misled viewers by splicing parts of Donald Trump's 6 January 2021 speech to make it appear he encouraged the Capitol Hill riot. Hillsborough Survivors Support Alliance chairman Peter Scarfe called the interview decision an insult to the memories and families of the 97. Liverpool FC contacted BBC Breakfast and BBC News and are understood to be furious and disappointed. MacKenzie apologised in 2012 and said he had been completely duped; The Sun remains boycotted in Merseyside. A 2016 inquest concluded the 97 victims were unlawfully killed and fans did not cause the crush.
