Paul and Ellen Eggers, former Peace Corps volunteers, returned to Malaysia for retirement after being inspired by an article highlighting affordable overseas options. They found Penang appealing for its picturesque mix of nature and urban life, along with a dependable public transportation system. Despite initial surprise from friends and family, they made a swift decision to downsize their lives in the US, embracing a new chapter in Penang, where they could maximize their retirement income.
"We knew that our income could go a lot farther in Malaysia, and we thought, 'We could actually do this. Why not?'"
"It was a very easy decision for us," Paul, now 71, told BI.
"We hadn't really thought a lot about it before, but then one of the places that was listed as very popular and very affordable was Penang in Malaysia."
"Unlike the hustle and bustle of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia's capital, they were drawn to Penang for its mix of natural and urban landscapes."
