Rocket Man - 99% Invisible
Briefly

Research into jetpack technology was primarily funded by the American military during the Cold War for potential wartime advantages like increasing soldiers' speed and range. The Bell rocket belt, developed using concentrated hydrogen peroxide for thrust, was a notable result.
Although technically not a jetpack because it used steam instead of jet engines, the Bell rocket belt could lift a person off the ground for twenty seconds. The first successful test and public demonstrations were conducted in the early 1960s by Hal Graham in front of President John F. Kennedy.
