Dwayne Lorenzo Richardson, a 53-year-old software engineering manager, was convicted of tax evasion, overstating his medical deductions by more than $1 million for an appendectomy.
He claimed exorbitant medical expenses of $945,000 for an appendectomy from 2010, claiming deductions from 2017 to 2019, leading to refunds totaling $165,000.
Richardson's tax evasion went unnoticed for years as he rationalized that because he hadn't been caught initially, he could continue deducting fictitious expenses.
The US District Court found Richardson guilty on three counts, and he faces up to five years in prison along with significant fines.
