US elections 2024: what is early voting, and can I do it?
Briefly

Voting early or absentee allows voters flexibility in their schedule, helping them avoid bad weather, long lines, or unexpected conflicts on election day.
States, with the exception of Mississippi, New Hampshire, and Alabama, offer all voters the chance to vote in person ahead of election day.
Most states begin counting early ballots on election day, but some require officials to wait until polls are closed to start counting.
Fourteen states require an excuse for casting a ballot by mail, while eight states conduct all-mail elections, sending ballots automatically to registered voters.
