Tokyo Marathon Joins Other Major Marathons in Adding Non-Binary Runners Category
Briefly

The Tokyo Marathon is adding a non-binary category for runners in 2025, setting up non-gendered changing rooms and restrooms and including the descriptor in participant lists and records to be the most inclusive race.
Yuka Kanno, a gender and sexuality studies professor, highlighted that Tokyo catching up in adding a non-binary category is long overdue and welcome news, although no awards are designated for non-binary competitors yet.
Japan faces criticism, including from U.S. ambassador Rahm Emanuel, for lagging in LGBTQ rights, being the only G7 member without legal recognition of same-sex marriages or protection against discrimination, hindering global talent recruitment.
