"Until I noticed a look on his face. He was sad. His eyes were tearing up. I care about him as a person, and his sadness transformed my view. I became aware of my stubbornness, my one-sidedness, things I could not see before. My perspective shifted. I wasn't "trying to change" my view, it just happened. Instantly, I was transformed."
"Sometimes, we have a fundamental shift in the way we view things-a shift in consciousness, sense of self, or worldview-and the way we behave begins to reorganize around it. When that happens, change flows easily, effortlessly from the inside out. I see transformation like this in my practice as a therapist all the time: A parent catches a glimpse of how tall their teen has grown and, in that instant, realizes they won't be home forever-and they drop the nagging."
A spontaneous shift in perception can instantly transform feelings, priorities, and behavior without deliberate effort. Disruption, loss, or witnessing another's vulnerability often triggers these shifts and opens the door to profound personal change. Noetic experiences enable access to deeper layers of meaning and self, promoting enduring reorientation. Sustainable change arises when identity or sense of self becomes more flexible rather than merely altering isolated behaviors. An inflexible sense of self keeps one entangled in the content of thoughts and limited viewpoints, while increased self-flexibility allows multiple perspectives and effortless, inside-out transformation. Examples include parenting realizations, health diagnoses, and bereavement prompting new priorities.
