The US Navy's Virginia-class submarine program is projected to be $17 billion over budget through 2030, highlighting deepening issues in submarine construction.
House Rep. Ken Calvert highlighted, 'These programs are in crisis. Without exception, they are falling behind... I have zero confidence that Navy shipbuilding will get back on track.'
Navy officials attributed delays to lingering COVID impacts on the national workforce and supply chains, stressing that industry has been reluctant to invest.
Calvert emphasized the Navy is only managing to construct 1.3 submarines per year against a requirement of two, exacerbating the budget crisis.
