New York cracks down on license plate covers with higher fines
Briefly

The new motor vehicle law, effective September 1, imposes fines up to $500 for using license plate covers, aimed at improving toll and red-light camera compliance.
DMV Commissioner Mark J.F. Schroeder stated that the changes ensure all users of public infrastructure pay their fair share and help crack down on crime.
Now illegal are any substances that obscure a plate's number, including certain sprays and shades, which had complicated efforts in toll collection.
Lawmakers highlighted the problem of 'ghost plates' for years, noting significant loss of toll revenue, including an estimated $407,000 in 2023.
