Mariska Hargitay suffered 'secondary trauma' from 'Law & Order: SVU' storylines
Briefly

"When I started the show, I wasn’t aware of how deeply it would go into me," Hargitay said. The impact of playing a role deeply analyzing the trauma of victims affected her personally and professionally.
"There’s been times when I didn’t know how to protect myself, and I think I was definitely a victim of secondary trauma from being inundated with these stories and knowing that they were true," Hargitay shared, highlighting the psychological toll her role has taken.
"I would feel like, well, at least I'm doing something about it," Hargitay said of her foundation, which provides support to survivors of crime and aims to change societal responses to violence and abuse.
"I was also overwhelmed and scared and kind of looked up to everybody. It was more of a patriarchal society 25 years ago," Hargitay reflected on her early experiences in the industry, indicating the shifts that have occurred over time.
