Mark Calabria, the former head of the FHFA, remarked that if Trump returns to the White House, he would aim to privatize Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac after 16 years under federal conservatorship.
Calabria emphasized it would take several years to transition Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac back to private status, highlighting discussions with the Treasury secretary, which could take six to nine months.
He stated, 'The chances of the agencies going private in 2025 is zero, but by 2027, there’s maybe a 70% chance,' suggesting a phased approach to the transition.
According to Calabria, detailed plans exist from his previous tenure at the FHFA for removing the GSEs from conservatorship, indicating that monitoring the implied guarantees remains critical despite the transition.
