Researchers placed the fish in a tank with mussels and amino-acid capsules buried under sediment. The fish were able to find these items and dig them up with their shovel-like feet, using specialized taste receptor molecules to detect buried prey.
David Kingsley remarked on the unique attributes of the northern sea robin, stating it's "the weirdest, coolest fish I'd ever seen", highlighting that these fish possess not just limbs, but multifunctional adaptations.
