The key to combatting climate change? Giant vacuum sucks CO2 from air
Briefly

Scientists built a giant vacuum in Iceland, the 'Mammoth', which pulls CO2 from the air using steel fans, dissolves it in water, and stores it underground. This system can extract 36,000 tonnes of CO2 annually.
The Mammoth utilizes energy from a nearby geothermal plant to operate 12 out of the potential 72 'collection containers' for carbon extraction. The trapped CO2 is released from the filters by increasing temperature, dissolved in water, and stored deep underground where it gradually turns into stone.
While critics argue for reducing fossil fuel use directly to combat climate change, proponents like Climeworks believe that technologies such as giant vacuums are crucial transitional solutions as certain industries find it challenging to switch to renewable energy sources.
