Texas oil wells are suddenly erupting with water. No one knows why
Briefly

In recent years, Schuyler Wight has noticed a growing number of abandoned oil wells coming back to life, gurgling fluids to the surface of his West Texas ranch.
The state's oil field regulator, the Texas Railroad Commission, has yet to offer an explanation for what's driving so much water to the surface.
Wight has watched the problem grow despite the Railroad Commission plugging about 10 old wells leaking on his property, with new ones resurfacing each time.
Old, leaky wells from World War II era, damaged over 80 years underground, are contributing to the reactivation and gushing of gassy water in the region.
