Strongest solar storm in 20 years puts on a light show DW 05/11/2024
Briefly

The strongest solar storm in more than two decades struck Earth, triggering spectacular auroras worldwide, from Britain to Tasmania. First coronal mass ejection (CME) upgraded to an 'extreme' geomagnetic storm, similar to the Halloween storms of October 2003.
Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) contain billions of tons of plasma and magnetic field from the sun's corona, travel at 800 km/s. Sun nearing peak of 11-year cycle, bringing increased activity.
Warnings issued to satellite operators, airlines, and power grid operators to prepare for possible disruptions due to changes in Earth's magnetic field caused by the solar storm from sunspot area AR3664.
