One of the main factors driving the global rise of AMR is the use of inappropriate or substandard antibiotics. People in low- and middle-income countries lack effective second-line antibiotics, increasing the risk of death from resistant infections.
A modelling study published in The Lancet indicates that a global investment of hundreds of millions of US dollars to improve access to antibiotics could avert millions of deaths from bacterial infections.
