Scientists unravel why a giant hole formed in Antarctica's sea ice
Briefly

Researchers at the University of Southampton found the Maud Rise polynya in the Weddell Sea was formed by a combination of ocean currents, wind, and increasing salt levels melting the sea ice.
'The Maud Rise polynya was discovered in the 1970s when remote sensing satellites that can see sea ice over the Southern Ocean were first launched,' said Aditya Narayanan, the study's lead author.
'2017 was the first time that we've had such a large and long-lived polynya in the Weddell Sea since the 1970s.' - Aditya Narayanan
