The FBI is investigating the sale of what are suspected to be hundreds of artefacts from the British Museum to buyers in the United States, with the return of 268 items and a further probe into 626 items underway.
Dr Ittai Gradel, the antiquities dealer who alerted the British Museum to theft suspicions, faced initial dismissal of his claims despite providing strong evidence, leading to the subsequent discovery of 2,000 missing, damaged, or stolen items.
