Climate change impacts on hydropower in the Middle East DW 05/31/2024
Briefly

With water stress set to worsen in a warming world, the strain on irrigation and freshwater supplies extends to hydroelectric power generation, vital for low-carbon energy, despite hydropower being the largest renewable source. Global hydropower output suffered an 8.5% drop in the first half of 2023, mainly driven by drying rivers and reservoirs in China.
The Euphrates and Tigris rivers, critical for hydroelectric power production, are struggling due to ongoing drought, high evaporation, and increased water resource competition in the Middle East. Hydropower capacity in the region, including in Turkey, is declining, impacting both agriculture and electricity production.
