The decision to remove a label containing a racially offensive term came after a six-day session attended by over 100 researchers. Plants with 'caffra' will now be renamed 'affra' to show African origin, impacting over 200 species like the coast coral tree, now known as Erythrina affra.
A new committee will oversee names for newly discovered species, aiming to prevent derogatory or offensive labels. Biologists have officially agreed to these rule changes for the first time, heralded as a significant step by botanist Sandy Knapp from the Natural History Museum in London.
