Around the Empire: Yankees news - 5/5/24
Briefly

Perpetually one of the biggest victims of the human strike zone, Judge was called out on a ball off the plate by Ryan Blakney. Judge was booted for the first time in his entire baseball playing life, and while standing up for himself is something I've wanted him to do for years, only time will tell if there's a marked change in how he gets calls.
Gerrit Cole took a major step forward in his rehab on Saturday, throwing off a mound for the first time. The Yankee ace chucked 15 from 60'6", will repeat that a couple more times this week, and then the club seems ready to plan out a rehab assignment.
If it weren't for Shohei Ohtani, Juan Soto would likely be a month into the most important contract year in recent baseball history. Soto's on the cusp of one of baseball's biggest paydays, and the Yankees have to figure out a way to keep him in the family.
