1999 Yankees Diary, June 29: Rocket takes off against Tigers
Briefly

After a couple of quiet innings on both sides, the Yankees got the scoring in this one underway in the bottom of the second. Shane Spencer took the first pitch of the inning from Justin Thompson and deposited it over the left-center field fence. The solo shot, his sixth of the season, gave the Yanks an early lead they would never look back on.
The night was not without the occasional knock for the Tigers, but Clemens kept things in check on the scoreboard. The Rocket allowed a pair of hits in the third, but escaped untouched thanks to a pair of groundouts. Tony Clark poked another in the fourth, but once again to no avail with Clemens working his way out of the inning with no real damage done.
In the fifth and sixth, the story was much the same. In the latter, a single and a double from Bobby Higginson and Dean Palmer put Detroit in prime position, but Clemens once again squeaked his way out with a strikeout and a flyout to avoid any trouble. In the seventh, he was able to work his first 1-2-3 inning of the night.
