After stepping out of the vehicle, the officers saw the 26-year-old wielding two knives, and after being unsuccessful with vocal commands, deployed their tasers.
Both officers fired their guns at the knife-wielding man, fatally striking him.
He was rushed to a local hospital where he died of his injuries.
"We try everything we can with emotionally disturbed people to deescalate," NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell said Sunday.
