Police sources told CBS New York the shooting was accidental and happened when the 12-year-old was playing with a rifle.
The 12-year-old faces manslaughter, criminal possession of a weapon, and criminally negligent homicide charges.
"I reached out to them and told them let me know when you're ready to talk, come through and sit with them, pray with them, pray for them. It's never good, something like this," Pastor James Nicholson said.
"He was really funny. He was my rival in basketball. He was really tough," friend Veyonte Borden said about the victim.
