Lindsay, a figurative painter, moved into the apartment at 491 Broadway in 1971. She and her husband were the first of what she called the "homesteaders" in the building, participating in the early artists' migration that defined Soho.
Maciunas got preliminary agreements to buy a handful of buildings and worked tirelessly to create spaces where artists could live and work affordably, marking the beginning of Soho as an artistic hub that thrived on creativity and community.
