The sanctuary, home to over 100 elephants and various other animals, faced devastating flooding, with water levels climbing as high as five metres.
Two elephants, Fah Sai and Ploy Thong, tragically lost their lives during the flooding; Fah Sai was carried away despite being a strong swimmer, while Ploy Thong, who was blind, was swept from her enclosure.
Sangduean Chailert, the founder of the sanctuary, expressed her sorrow over the loss, sharing that she buried the elephants near the site and planted trees in their memory.
The rescue efforts were challenging due to the extreme conditions, emphasizing the importance of awareness and support in safeguarding wildlife sanctuaries during natural disasters.
