"There were indeed contacts,"
"there was a lack of any intention or desire to listen to our position."
"Given the impossibility of exchanging views, the mutual dialogue has not developed,"
"The Russian team is ready for this, the ball is in the Ukrainian court,"
Russian forces reported advances around Pokrovsk and pushed Ukrainian troops out of Sukhyi Yar south of the city. Pokrovsk contains crucial road and rail junctions and its population has fallen from more than 60,000 prewar to about 7,000. The reported advance aims to secure a stronghold for operations north toward Kramatorsk and Slovyansk. The advance reports have not been independently verified. The Kremlin indicated Britain attempted a back channel for dialogue but contacts collapsed amid claims of an unwillingness to listen to Russia's position. Russian officials stated readiness to resume peace negotiations in Istanbul; prior July talks resulted only in a prisoner swap.
