'A sigh of relief': State forms group to tackle crumbling foundations
Briefly

Massachusetts lawmakers have initiated a response to the issue of crumbling home foundations by forming a stakeholder working group as part of the new state budget. A report detailing findings and recommendations will be submitted to the legislature by March 2026. Over the years, many homeowners have sought action on this issue. The problem stems from pyrrhotite in concrete, leading to significant structural damage. The working group will include various legislative and executive members and homeowners from advocacy groups. Funding solutions are anticipated in future budgets.
"This has been a sigh of relief for the homeowners," said Sen. Peter Durant, representing the Worcester and Hampshire districts.
Durant says he aims to pass legislation in the budget by next year that will fund a resolution to this issue.
The Crumbling Concrete Stakeholder Working Group will convene under the Housing and Livable Communities Secretary and consist of members from the legislature and executive members of housing, transportation, and consumer affairs.
"This is the beginning of something positive," said Michelle Loglisci, one of the founders of Massachusetts Residents Against Crumbling Foundations.
