The new water plant was the talk of the town and everyone was hopeful about the benefits it would bring. But the project stalled in 2010 due to high costs and internal politics, and shortly afterwards, everybody left.
Commissioned to supply fresh water to 5,000 people, the derelict water treatment plant now stands abandoned, with only the resident caretaker, Sayed Ahmed, left to guard the site.
After her hands and feet became swollen, Khatun was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease (CKD), shocked to learn her kidneys were not functioning for seven years.
