First U.S. Case of Sexually Transmitted Fungal Infection Found in New York City
Briefly

The new sexually transmitted fungal infection, a form of ringworm, was found in a man in his 30s from New York City, discovered after he developed a skin rash on his penis, buttocks, and limbs.
The infection caused by Trichophyton mentagrophytes type VIIa can be mistaken for eczema lesions, delaying appropriate treatment, and takes months to clear up even with treatment.
The infection, highly contagious and previously seen in Europe, resulted in 13 cases in France in 2023, mainly in men who have sex with men, but no similar symptoms were reported by the man's partners.
The study's lead author mentioned this new sexually transmitted fungal infection as the latest severe skin infection in the US, raising concerns about the rising cases of STIs globally.
