A young social media star with cerebral palsy, Grace Wolstenholme, faced financial losses after scammers used her content to set up a fake Facebook account, allowing them to profit from her fans sending stars and gifts.
Despite repeated efforts by Wolstenholme over five months, including reporting to Meta and Action Fraud, the fake account with 50,000 followers was only removed after The Guardian's intervention.
Wolstenholme faced challenges getting the imitation account removed, following the proper channels, involving law enforcement, reporting it to Action Fraud, and taking breaks from social media due to the incident.
