Southern California is seeing more quakes in 2024 than it has in 20 years
Briefly

Since 1932, Southern California averages 10 to 12 sequences of quakes of magnitude 4.0 and above annually, but the past 20 years fell below average with five per year.
Stephen DeLong stated that the recent uptick in seismic activity is a random occurrence, emphasizing that the risk of major quakes remains unchanged despite increased minor quakes.
Lucy Jones noted that 2024 is closer to the normal seismic pattern of Southern California, with 13 sequences of magnitude 4.0 and above recorded since the year's start.
DeLong highlighted that while the recent uptick doesn't heighten the chances of a large earthquake, the region still faces risk due to accumulated stress in faults.
