Popular Russian River beach closed for Labor Day weekend after dam breach
Briefly

"Its a crazy, a force of water," said Nonie Marie Mitchell. Mitchell can't believe how much damage a dam breach on Russian River caused, at popular Vacation Beach in Guerneville. "Something rotted out from the bottom or broke through with such force, it came straight across and wiped out that whole edge of road," said Mitchell. This incident has raised significant concerns over safety and preparedness in the area.
"Normally, this whole area would be packed with tourists and right now, this beach is closed," said Benji Nelson. This statement highlights the immediate impact on tourism due to the dam breach, as locals and visitors alike are affected by the closures over Labor Day weekend.
"Out of caution, the park and rec district pulled some of the boards out to release pressure on the dam which lowered river levels," said Sonoma County Fire District Captain, Rob Cassady. This detail emphasizes the proactive measures taken to ensure safety, likely at the cost of recreation and access to the area.
"This is only way into the community when the bridge is in. They try to keep it open through fire season so we don't get stuck," said Nelson. This highlights the critical role of the road and bridge for local residents, particularly during the prime fire season.
