Here's why DLR trains are getting shorter
Briefly

The 30-year-old DLR trains are nearing retirement, but while waiting for 54 new trains to be fully tested, TfL is reducing their capacity by running convoys with fewer carriages to save mileage.
If kept running normally, the DLR could have lost around five trains monthly, posing challenges for passengers. To extend service, TfL opts to reduce mileage on old trains.
The introduction of new two-car trains running on the Woolwich branch aims to ensure service continuance until October, as the 54 new trains are expected to increase capacity by 60% eventually.
