GCSE results 2024: London students get best grades in country as top marks fall nationwide

The North East saw the lowest number of top grades awarded at 17.8%, marking a small improvement but highlighting ongoing regional disparities in education.
Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson emphasized the Government's commitment to tackling entrenched regional disparities in results, acknowledging the resilience shown by students across the regions.
Exam board director Myles McGinley pointed out that while the North East narrowed the gap with London marginally, significant work remains to address regional educational inequality.
