Schumer's new bill would permit Pride flags at national parks
"The lesson is simple. Rights that are not secured in law can be threatened, and symbols that are not protected can be stripped away,"
"The Pride flag "is not a decoration. It's a living symbol of history, of resilience, and the ongoing struggle for justice and equality.""
"The Trump administration tried to erase our vibrant LGBTQ+ history by literally tearing down our flag,"
"But rest assured we won't let them."
Sen. Chuck Schumer is drafting a bill to authorize display of Pride flags at national park sites, including Stonewall National Monument. Schumer is working on the legislation with Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and Rep. Dan Goldman, all Democrats from New York. The effort responds to President Trump prohibiting the Pride flag on some federal properties and its removal from Stonewall, where local leaders re-raised a flag despite the federal directive. The proposed bill would allow national park officials to display the Pride flag, condemn its removal from Stonewall, and urge its restoration. The bill has not yet been introduced and follows other policy and legal efforts to protect Pride flag displays.
