Up to 95% of the species of fungi on the planet are still to be described, according to a 2023 report from the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.
Using DNA sequencing, both professional mycologists and amateur enthusiasts are identifying fungi that become the first specimens of their species to be recorded in scientific databases.
