Speaker Ted Arnott ordered independent member Sarah Jama to leave the chamber after refusing to remove her keffiyeh, resulting in a ban. Arnott did not resort to physical removal. Jama sees the keffiyeh ban as racist and vows to keep wearing it.
The keffiyeh ban was enacted as it was viewed as a symbol of making a political statement, contravening assembly rules. Ontario NDP Leader Marit Stiles denounced the treatment of Jama in the legislature, decrying the message sent to Arab, Muslim, and Palestinians.
