DBOS: A better way to build applications?
Briefly

At the end of March 2024, Mike Stonebraker announced in a blog post the release of DBOS Cloud, 'a transactional serverless computing platform, made possible by a revolutionary new operating system, DBOS, that implements OS services on top of a distributed database.'
The idea for DBOS originated based on the growing state an operating system must maintain and the inadequacies of legacy code like Linux, pushing for the integration of DBMS into the kernel to build a new operating system.
Mike Stonebraker, a prominent figure in the database-focused computer science field since the 1970s, has been instrumental in the foundation and evolution of various database systems, such as Ingres, Postgres, and PostgreSQL.
The concept of DBOS stems from the need to address the scaling challenges faced by organizations like Databricks, where traditional OS scheduling technology was insufficient, leading to the adoption of a DBMS solution for improved performance.
