A Baldur's Gate 3 modder has managed to swap turn-based combat for real-time battles, but it currently comes with the risk of getting slaughtered mid-chat
Briefly

While tinybike's mod has successfully introduced a real-time combat experience, it is still in early development, with many features yet to be implemented. For instance, the ability to pause and issue commands is still not functional, which limits its effectiveness in longer campaigns. "I think because of the way I'm doing combat, which is basically by forcing everything to remain technically out-of-combat, pausing should actually be pretty simple," tinybike commented, alluding to hopes for future development.
Despite being a work-in-progress, the mod has already showcased the potential for engaging real-time battles in Baldur's Gate 3. Modder tinybike has noted the excitement surrounding the modding community, particularly after Patch 7 reignited interest in experimentation. With custom maps and real-time battle elements taking shape, there's a burgeoning ecosystem of creative input from players.
