A ransomware cyberattack in February infiltrated a limited portion of the Anne Arundel County government’s network, compromising confidential patient data from local health services. The county was first aware of the incident on February 22 and immediately sought assistance for a thorough investigation, involving cybersecurity specialists and law enforcement. Despite the disruption, no specific ransomware group has claimed responsibility, and investigations continue to understand the full impact and origin of the attack, which began between January 28 and February 22.
Officials said in a news release that the county first became aware of the attack Feb. 22 and immediately commissioned an investigation into the extent of the breach "with the assistance of industry-leading cybersecurity specialists, law enforcement partners, and relevant state agencies."
The ongoing investigation determined that the incident originated externally from a threat actor and was a ransomware attack," the county said, explaining that "a limited subset of the county's network" was infiltrated between Jan. 28 and Feb. 22.
