Victims of the UK's infected blood scandal will start receiving their final compensation payments this year, following a report citing exposure of patients to HIV and hepatitis risks by civil servants and doctors.
The infected blood scandal is considered the deadliest disaster in the history of the UK's National Health Service since 1948, with about 30,000 people infected with HIV or hepatitis C.
Cabinet Office Minister John Glen mentioned that victims most in need will receive a 210,000 pounds interim compensation within 90 days, with an overall compensation package exceeding 10 billion pounds.
The report revealed a decades-long cover-up by UK governments regarding the contaminated blood scandal, where an estimated 3,000 people died after receiving tainted blood or blood products.
