Real Health: 'My parents (80s) started weights in January and the results are transformational' - Ageing expert Clare Johnston
"I got more interested in skincare and I took it down that route of looking good as we age and then of course, as I started interviewing experts and getting into the science of it. The reality dawned on me that this is a head-to-toe job. This is aging from within and the superficial side of it slid away."
"The reality is, I think we all thought we would reach a point in life of no return. When you're in your eighties, if you're frail, you can't reverse frailty. But that's exactly what gaining muscle can do and we can all regain it, which is fantastic. It's such a positive message. We don't have to become frail, so it's been something of a revelation to us."
Initial interest in ageing may begin with skincare but often shifts to scientific understanding of bodily processes. Aging operates from within and affects the whole body rather than only external appearance. Muscle mass plays a central role in healthy ageing. Loss of muscle and resulting frailty are not necessarily permanent. Regaining muscle is possible even later in life and can reverse frailty. Strength and muscle-building thus offer a practical, positive intervention to reduce vulnerability in older age and to maintain independence and resilience.
