The French prosecutor in New Caledonia said authorities have opened an investigation into unrest that has left seven people dead and significant destruction, with tensions between those seeking independence and those loyal to France.
He added that investigators are interested in anyone on the island, regardless of their level of involvement or responsibility in the unrest, looking into charges of criminal association, criminal acts, and misdemeanors.
Authorities are also investigating those suspected of violence against civilians caught up in the unrest, with several New Caledonia police officers in custody.
