TikTok denounces French criminal probe over youth suicides
"We strongly refute the accusations,"
"more than 50 features and preset settings designed specifically to support the safety and well-being of teenagers"
"propaganda in favour of products, objects, or methods recommended as means of committing suicide"
"categorically rejects the deceptive presentation"
French prosecutors opened a criminal investigation into TikTok's algorithms over allegations that the platform drove young people to suicide. TikTok strongly refuted the accusations and said it offers more than 50 features and preset settings to support teenage safety and well-being. Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau said the probe followed a parliamentary inquiry that highlighted failures to protect vulnerable users. The Paris police cybercrime unit will investigate alleged propaganda promoting methods of suicide and whether TikTok provides a platform for illegal transactions by organised gangs, each carrying substantial prison terms and fines. TikTok has over 1.5 billion users and faces scrutiny in Europe and the United States.
